Better early learning for more pre-schoolers

An innovative, first-of-its-kind early learning project will be delivered by local Early Childhood Education (ECE) providers through a collaborative programme in the Tāmaki suburbs of Glen Innes, Panmure and Pt. England in Auckland.

The Ministry of Education (MOE), Comet Auckland, Tāmaki Learning Champions (TLC), Tāmaki Redevelopment Company (TRC) and Manaiakalani Education Trust (MET) have pooled their expertise and local knowledge to create the ‘Tāmaki Early Learning Project’.

On Tuesday 24 June, they will meet to formally adopt the plan as strategic partners in delivery of the project.

The project is a five-year implementation plan which aims to achieve the Better Public Services target of 98% prior participation in ECE by 2016 as well as improving the quality of services in the Tāmaki local area. Currently 83.9% of school age youth in Tāmaki have participated in ECE when they arrive at school.

“The strategy has been created from the grass roots and this has ensured that fanau and community aspirations are the corner stone of the way forward,” says Wilson Irons, Chair of TLC Trust.

The project will include a number of initiatives including the opening of a new ECE centre later this year, in the first neighbourhood development of the Tāmaki Regeneration Programme.

“We know that the first five years of a child’s life are the most important and our shared commitment to this project signifies our commitment to lasting change in Tamaki,” says Debra Lawson, CEO for TRC.

The Tamaki Early Learning Project outlines five key goals which fall under two themes:

Increasing Participation
· Achieving the National Target by December 2016

· Keeping up with projected growth in demand

Improvement of Quality
· Improving outcomes for Maori and Pasifika children and those with low socio-economic backgrounds

· Prioritising the transition to school

· Strengthening early learning culture

All parties will meet together for a signing ceremony on Tuesday 24 June at 11am at TRC offices, 244 Apirana Ave, Glen Innes.
