And the UCOL scholarship goes to…
Third year Bachelor of Applied Science (MIT) student Anna Greville is making a habit out of winning UCOL scholarships.
Anna won a Palmerston North City Council Jaycee Trust Scholarship at the same mid-year award ceremony last June. The
UCOL student scholarships are awarded twice a year, to reward excellence and achievement.
This year Anna is one of three winners of a Graduate Women UCOL Award, presented by the Graduate Women Manawatu
Charitable Trust.
After graduating, Anna wants to specialise in CT and ultrasound with an aim to work in a children’s hospital such as
Starship in Auckland.
Susan Wall and Karen Cole also received Graduate Women UCOL Awards for women enrolled at any UCOL campus, who have
excelled in effort and achievement.
Susan is in her final year of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree which is taught at Whanganui UCOL’s Quay School of the
Arts. She has been involved in the community as a volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor and as a weekly volunteer subject for
the training of Urban Search & Rescue Dogs. Susan hopes to go on to do a Master’s degree in Art Therapy.
In her final year of a Nursing degree, Karen Cole is keen to work in the areas of Accident & Emergency, Neonatal Intensive Care or on a surgical ward. The mother of twin daughters, who are both UCOL graduates,
would eventually like to undertake a Master’s degree in Nursing.
The Palmerston North City Council Jaycee Trust Scholarships went to second year Bachelor of Nursing student Reguina
Blair and Bachelor of Applied Visual Imaging (BAVI) student Jennifer-Lee Harley.
Reguina moved to New Zealand from Russia 14 years ago with her two children and a Science degree. She has always had a
passion for medicine and combines her studies with work at the Mash Trust as a Community Support Worker.
Having excelled at High School in Digital Technology and Art History, Jennifer-Lee Harley hopes to go on to be a video
editor, working for a company such as WETA workshop with her ultimate dream to work for the Discovery Channel.
First year Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Imaging Technology) student Shreya Gupta was awarded the Fletcher
Challenge Scholarship. She is the first member of her family to leave India and has worked two jobs to support herself
since arriving in New Zealand in 2010. Shreya is highly motivated in her studies and hopes to go on to do advanced
medical radiation technologies on the completion of her Degree at UCOL.
The Andrew Cliff Award recognises peer mentoring and was established in memory of a former senior lecturer. It was
awarded to Brendon Green.
Currently a New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Electrical)(Power Specialisation) student, Brendon and has a plan to
complete his current course, gain a Diploma in Information & Communication Technology by the end of 2015 and the Degree in Information & Communication Technology by the end of 2016.
The scholarships were presented at UCOL yesterday (Thursday) by Deputy Chief Executive Academic, Bonnie Dewart, who
congratulated the winners and noted the very high quality of applications for the first semester awards. “There were
many deserving applicants,” she says. “I wish we had more scholarships to offer, so more students could be rewarded for
their efforts and achievements.”
