EIT Academic Co-Authors Top Research Paper
A research paper co-authored by an EIT academic, an EIT graduate and a former EIT research professor has been selected by international publishers as 2013’s outstanding paper.
The paper, Valuing Flexibility in Career Training Decisions, examines the importance of understanding and valuing flexibility in post-secondary educational and training choices.
It was written by EIT School of Business accounting lecturer Noel Yahanpath, Dr Mark Neal from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London (formerly a research professor at EIT) and EIT Bachelor of Business Studies graduate Shane McCormack.
The researchers say flexibility, “the degree to which a decision leading to action allows further choices over time”, is a crucial though neglected aspect of choosing training and educational programmes.
While some decisions “lock” students into particular training and career pathways, others involve more diverse opportunities to train or work. The researchers highlight the value of flexibility by comparing specialist degree courses to more general degrees such as business, arguing that understanding and addressing the flexibility in such choices should be an integral part of career counselling and potential tertiary studies.
Emerald Group Publishing Ltd will promote the paper in its marketing campaigns, press releases and via social media. It will also become the “sample article” for Education + Training, appearing on the journal’s homepage as a guide to prospective authors on writing a high-quality paper.
