Canadian Educator Barbara Arrowsmith-Young Headlines ACE Conference
Canadian author and educator, Barbara Arrowsmith-Young will deliver a keynote at this year’s Adult and Community
Education (ACE) Conference at the CQ Hotel in Wellington, June 17-19.
Ms Arrowsmith-Young is the founder of the Arrowsmith School and the Arrowsmith programme which helps children and adults
overcome a wide range of learning difficulties. In her book The Woman Who Changed Her Brain, she documents the extensive neurological research she completed and the exercises she developed to overcome her own
severe learning difficulties.
Other Keynote speakers at the ACE Conference include Marcus Akuhata-Brown who will offer insights from his recent work
with youth and Robbie Guevara who will weave this year's theme of Learning to Learn Ako Ki Te Ako with highlights from ASPBAE's fifty year history which is being celebrated in 2014.
The theme Learning to Learn Ako Ki Te Ako, provides an opportunity for conference participants to explore innovative approaches that enhance the learning
experience for learners and assist them to overcome learning difficulties.
Cutting edge practitioners will share their research and experience in a range of workshops which include learning in
the dark, increasing focus and energy through mindfulness, fostering athletes and academics through Māori pedagogy, and
flipping classrooms and team based learning strategies.
Over 8000 ACE programmes throughout Aotearoa offer literacy, numeracy, computer skills, technical, life and leisure
skills in a variety of settings. Many learners have previously had negative
learning experiences and benefit from the learner - centred approaches offered by ACE practitioners in community halls,
homes, schools and on marae.
