New Appointment to Whitireia and WelTec Council

Roger Sowry, Chair of the Council of WelTec and Whitireia today announced the appointment of Antony Royal to the
institutions’ governing body. “I am very pleased to announce Antony’s appointment and delighted he has accepted this new
role,” says Mr Sowry.
“The combined Council of Whitireia and WelTec leads vocational tertiary education provision across the Wellington
region. Antony’s broad and specific skills and many involvements in the community sit well with the Council’s combined
view and oversight of two large institutions - WelTec and Whitireia. His background in the ICT industry will be
invaluable as we strive to make Wellington the destination of choice for domestic and international students,” says Mr
Sowry.
Antony holds a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Auckland University, has spent many years in the
ICT industry and currently holds a number of governance positions including, director of 2 Degrees Mobile Ltd, director
of Hautaki Ltd, Trustee of Te Huarahi Tika Trust, and Trustee on Ngāti Tamaterā Post Settlement Governance Entity.
He also chairs Te Mana o Kupe Trust, which was recently established to support the cluster of 13 schools in Porirua East
whose focus is to deliver greater educational achievement by engaging tamariki, teachers and whanau through the use of
technology.
Previous roles have included Global Infrastructure Manager and Web Initiatives Manager for the NZ Dairy Board
(Fonterra), implementation of Financial Management Systems for a number different Government Departments, and positions
on a number of advisory boards. Antony has been involved in many projects that involve technology and better educational
outcomes, and has worked on several projects funded by the Tertiary Education Commission.
Antony Royal (Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Raukawa, Tamaterā, Ngāti Tamaterā) is the son of Dr Tūroa Royal, Foundation Principal and
former CEO of Whitireia Community Polytechnic (1985-1996) and MaryRose Royal long time staff member of Whitireia.
