“Best Yet” Carpentry Apprentice Challenge
“It was the best yet,” says New Zealand Carpentry Apprentice Challenge Northland Co-ordinator, Mark Pearson, of this year’s event held at NorthTec
Future Trades on Saturday.
“The project was achievable in the time period and the contestants were proud of their finished result.”
This year’s project was to build a park bench and it was the fifth New Zealand Carpentry Apprentice Challenge.
The event is a competition run by Certified Builders, Polytechs, and Industry Training Association Building (ITAB) throughout New Zealand. Mark Pearson co-ordinates the organization, materials, and contestants for the Northland region and is a Carpentry Tutor at Mark – “Each region selects several apprentices and they are set the same challenge.
The challenge changes every year and is chosen on a rotational basis by different regions. This year we chose four Northland contestants and they are all working apprentices in year 2-4 of their National Certificate of Carpentry.
They were Daniel Munn employed by Grant Tregidga Builders Ltd, Paul Maihi employed by T W Henwood Builders Ltd, Craig Chatterton employed by Mitchell Builders, and Ben Clotworthy employed by MJ Quality .
