NMIT Appoints New Head Wine Tutor
Australian David Hayward has been appointed to the role of head wine tutor at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology
(NMIT)’s Marlborough Campus.
David Hayward has been involved in the wine industry for around 25 years working in both small and medium sized
wineries. He has operated his own boutique vineyard and winery in Australia since 2000 – Hayward’s of Locksley in the
Strathbogie Ranges wine region and has been a lecturer in Oenology with the University of Melbourne for the past 14
years where he was involved in wine programme development, coordination and delivery at undergraduate and postgraduate
level. His educational qualifications include a Master of Wine Technology and Viticulture, a Graduate Certificate in
University Teaching, and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Wine Science). David has also been a judge at wine shows such as
the Victorian Wines Show, the Dookie Wine Show and Kyneton Wine Show.
Describing himself as an “unashamed climate change refugee,” David says he is excited about making the move to
Marlborough and loves the wines produced in cooler climates. “They are restrained and elegant, making them more suitable
to accompany good food. New Zealand continues to evolve as a wine producing nation with some great opportunities
especially with alternative varieties suited to cooler climates; I look forward to being part of this evolution.”
NMIT Programme Area Leader for Primary Industries Jeff Wilson says NMIT is committed to delivering a world-class
education in viticulture and wine and the institute has been fortunate to attract someone with David’s background and
experience.
“Our viticulture and wine programmes have a strong focus on practical, applied, industry-based learning so it’s great to
have someone with so much hands-on experience in running a boutique winery and vineyard. David’s international
experience and contacts will also enhance the programme for our students.”
David Hayward replaces Tricia Jane, who held the role since 2008.
NMIT offers viticulture and wine training at certificate and diploma level and a pathway to the Lincoln University
Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology degree which students can study at the Marlborough campus. The Diploma in
Viticulture and Wine Production reflects the strengths of the Marlborough region and is supported by the local wine and
viticulture industries. It can be studied on campus or online. Facilities on-site at the NMIT Marlborough campus include
a vineyard, and a modern purpose built winery and state-of-the-art lab facility situated within the Marlborough Wine
Research Centre.
