Support for Greens’ Safe Walking and Cycling to School Policy
NZEI Te Riu Roa believes many schools will welcome the opportunity to work with their local government to develop infrastructure so more children can cycle and walk to school safely.
The Green Party has launched a policy that will invest $200 million over four years into walking and cycling infrastructure to protect children from traffic so they can travel safely to school.
NZEI President Judith Nowotarski said it was great that schools and local government would be able to work together to decide what their community needed to encourage more children to walk or bike to school.
“Overseas studies have found that physical activity before school has major benefits in aiding concentration, while a reduction in school-related car trips will make the roads even safer for children walking and biking,” she said.
