Creativity Sparks at Cyberport Hong Kong
At the invitation of Cyberport (a creative digital community with a vision to establish itself as a leading information
and communications technology hub in the Asia-Pacific region) WelTec Head of Creative Industries Teriu Lemon and
Lecturer Gareth McGhie recently travelled to Hong Kong where creativity dominated traditional ways of approaching
information technology applications and tools.
Teriu and Gareth joined Laura Brandon, a robotic software developer at NEC to deliver a six-day workshop with
Cyberport’s IT students challenging the participants to think creatively about IT tools and non-traditional
applications.
“By considering the five human senses - sound, sight, touch, smell and taste we encouraged the students’ thinking which
resulted in a range of innovative ideas being developed or progressed over the course of the workshop. Through 21st
century technology we can experience our environment in new ways. This is the exciting concept, wearable computing,”
says Teriu.
“Our focus at WelTec is on joining technology and creativity. The Bachelor of Creative Technologies allows staff and
students to explore and consider the creative practice of art, design, interior and digital interdisciplinary
collaboration with industries such as engineering, construction, mechanical, mechatronics, automotive and information
technology - innovation being the key.
The partnership with NEC means WelTec student and staff get to collaborate with a world leading giant in technology R
WelTec worked with Cyberport for four years and plan to undertake more advanced workshops with them in the future.
WelTec has delivered workshops in:
• Sculptural Art that interacted directly with the public through arduinos and sensors. This work was entered as a
display at Asia Siggraph 2011 one of the biggest interactive computer graphic exhibitions in the world.
• Creative Technology Process: 3D Depth Sensing Interactivity
• Wearable Computing – smart products and interactive design.
“Through our industry partnerships we know our expertise and creativity is not only valued here in New Zealand, but
overseas. Our staff, alongside our partners NEC, have a contribution to make in the world of IT through a creative lens.
