Leading line-up of speakers at International Gambling Conference 2014
The 5th International Gambling Conference is being held from 19 to 21 February at the Sir Paul Reeves Building at AUT University’s brand new City Campus Conference Centre.
The Conference, themed Gambling in a Mobile Era – Developments, Regulation and Responses, has attracted a host of leading international and local academics, researchers and over 200 delegates from more than 12 countries around the world.
There is an impressive line-up of keynote speakers. The first day of the Conference features Associate Professor Papaarangi Reid, Tumuaki and Head of Department of Maori Health at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland. Her keynote address entitled E Ngā Rā o Mua – the Days in Front of Us, will explore, in this new culture of instant gratification, what lessons we can bring from the past and how we frame critical work preventing harm.
Also featured on the first day is Judge Mark G. Farrell, Senior Justice in the Amherst, New York Criminal and Civil Court. Judge Farrell’s keynote address entitled Therapeutic Justice - the World's First Gambling Treatment Court, will discuss and analyse the creation, implementation, and twelve-year-plus experience of the world's first and only Gambling Treatment Court.
Professor Gerda Reith, Professor of Social Science, and Director of Research in the School of Social and Political Science, at the University of Glasgow is keynote speaker on Thursday 20 February. Her address to the Conference, entitled Mobile Gambling: Conceptual and Methodological Challenges for Research, will examine the dramatic recent growth of mobile and wireless technologies that have led to claims we have entered a new 'mobile era' in terms of consumer and social affairs and the implications this shift has for gambling.
Samantha Thomas, Associate Professor of Public Health at School of Health and Society, University of Wollongong, Australia, will address the Conference on Friday 21 February. She will discuss the extent and impact of sports betting marketing within Australian sport exploring the ways in which sport has been utilised to market wagering in Australia, the impact on gambling attitudes and behaviours in different audience segments, and the arguments from industry aimed at countering calls for comprehensive reform.
The 5th International Gambling Conference 2014 is hosted by Hapai Te Hauora Tapui Maori Public Health, the Gambling and Addictions Research Centre at AUT University, and the Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand.
