NorthTec Students Association kicks back into life

By Pania Moulton (NorthTec Applied Writing graduate)

As the phoenix rises from the ashes so has The Student Association at NorthTec after not being a part of campus life for many years.
The Student Association was first at NorthTec then known as Northland Polytechnic in 1991. It was known as Students Association of Tai Tokerau or S.A.T.T.

The then Student Association had the building which now houses Student Success and they also had three staff employed to run the office on a day to day basis. They had a regular newsletter to keep the students informed as to what was happening around campus and a: buy–sell –exchange section for students.
The Association was based where the students have their current lounge. So S.A.T.T was the beginnings of great things for NorthTec students and now we have a new generation of students bringing it back to being part of NorthTec.

During the last semester of 2013 a student election rally was held throughout NorthTec. Students were asked to put their names forward if they wished to run for the position of co-chair. A male and female student was needed for these positions. Once the nominations were received (there were three males and four female) a short time for campaigning was held around NorthTec.

Campaigning was done in the form of posters, Facebook and the student portal - finally they were on the hustings making their case was held outside Student Success building at Raumanga Campus.

This was a great opportunity for the students to hear from the candidates and to share in a sausage sizzle.

Students then voted for who they wanted to in the positions of co-chair. The winning candidates were Vicky Maihi from Social Services studies and Levi Mc Kenzie. Due to circumstances beyond Levi’s control he had to step down as the co-chair and Ryan Marsich was nominated by the student association as a co-chair.

There is also an active small committee of a secretary, treasurer, events coordinator and Eliza Wallace Kaitakawaenga/Student Advisor with Student Success offering support to our new Student Association.
The new Student Association of NorthTec 2014 hopes to represent and advocate the views of all NorthTec students and working toward creating a culture of excellence and a student- driven learning environment. They also hope to have more student events on and off campus.

If you would like to help them, or have them help you please contact Eliza Wallace- Kaitaakawaenga /Student Advisor with Student Success at Raumanga Campus.
