Applications are up at CPIT
CPIT’s Chief Executive Kay Giles is pleased to see applications for programmes at the institute up by almost 300 on the
same time last year.
“Christchurch is actually getting a lot of attention as an exciting city, from publications such as Lonely Planet and
the New York Times, so we could expect that sort of publicity to work in our favour,” Giles said. “There are many
opportunities for students to get involved in interesting transitional and creative projects happening around town and
that sort of unique experience is appealing to many students.”
Christchurch’s redevelopment has also created opportunities for graduates to fast track their careers, particularly in
rebuild-related areas, she said. “It’s not only the tradespeople who are in demand. It’s project managers, accountants
and engineering technologists. Then there is a flow on effect to other areas - a good example is the high number of
applications in nursing and applied science, which is timely given CPIT’s involvement in the new Health Precinct.”
Supported by $18.9 million of government funding, CPIT announced an expansion of facilities at the Trades Innovation
Institute last November that could see an additional 500 students being trained this year to contribute to the skills
shortage needs for the Canterbury rebuild.
The expansion in trades training is part of an extensive campus master plan of new buildings and refurbishment of
existing buildings through to 2014 on both campuses.
More places have been made available this year for fee-free youth pathway study options for 16 to 19 year olds, many in
trades-related programmes. New scholarships have been announced to enable women to train in trades for free during 2014.
Alongside nursing and applied science, ICT, art & design and CPIT’s National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art are all showing strong numbers of applications.
In total, applications stood at 5,200 on 22/1/14 and at 4921 for the same date in 2013.
During 2013 figures for both domestic and international students recovered to pre-quake numbers.
Applications are still being processed with many programmes still accepting enrolments. CPIT opens its doors for a
Community Open Day on 25 January 11am to 2pm to connect with those people still considering their study options for
2014.
