School Journal Wins Gold!
SCHOOL JOURNAL WINS GOLD!
No matter your age, if you attended primary school in NZ, you will probably recall the day you graduated from Rainbow Readers to your first School Journal.
Still commonplace in NZ schools, the School Journal is this year’s winner of the Best Book in Primary Publishing Award at the CLNZ Educational Publishing Awards. The Award is a bitter sweet. Earlier this year, it was announced that Learning Media, the state owned publisher of the School Journal since 1907, would be closing its doors. Soon after the news, the Ministry of Education announced that Lift Education had secured a contract to continue to publish the School Journal. Lift Education is owned by the winner of the Best Educational Resource for Export at tonight’s event – South Pacific Press.
David Glover, departing CEO of Learning Media accepted the Award and was also presented with a gift by Kevin Chapman (Publishers Association representative) for his contribution to the NZ publishing industry.
Back lit by the twinkling lights of the Harbour Bridge at dusk, the Windy Ridge School Kapa Haka group welcomed guests to the Awards event with a moving performance.
Paula Browning, CEO Copyright Licensing New Zealand and MC for the evening commented that “Entries into this year’s awards demonstrates the strength of New Zealand education publishing. There is significant growth potential for New Zealand in being able to build on existing export markets in the USA, UK, Australia and Canada and to reach into as yet untapped markets in countries like Brazil, Chile, South Korea and China.”
