Competition highlights MIT students’ passion for fashion

Annual Wella Hairdressing competition highlights MIT students’ passion for fashion

Tashina Hapeta Heremaia, Angel James, Ngarina Wong and Ferina Ah Kuoi are all pleased with the final outcomes of the competition

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) Hair and Beauty students showed off their creativity and finesse as they competed in the in-house Wella Trends Vision Awards held at MIT’s salon.
The event hosted by MIT mirrors the international hair industry’s Wella Professional International Trends Vision Awards in that students were required to create and execute a concept based on one of the same four trends showcased in the international version.
This year’s theme for the international competition was The Sound of Colour and the four trends were: Fusion, Echo, Decibel and Allegra. Each student had to choose one of these trends to create their own hairstyle, make-up and outfit.
Judging the competition were MIT alumnae Mana Dave, who won the 2012 Hairdresser of the Year and Brad Lepper from French Revolver Studio. Other industry judges included Natasha Boustridge from Blaze and Laura Williams from Jan Waite.
The competition had strict time frames in which the students were given four hours to cut, colour and style their model’s hair before moving on to makeup for an hour and then getting professional photographs of their models for the judges to review.
Senior Lecturer of Hair and Beauty Sonia Baker-Johnston says, “The competition is a really good way to prepare the students for the industry and teaches them important skills like creativity and time management that come with being a professional hairdresser.”

Angel James is one of the students who took part in the Wella Trends Visions Awards competition today.

“The most challenging part was definitely the time frames in which we had to have everything done by,” she says. “Four hours seems like a lot of time to do somebody’s hair but once you start the time goes so quickly and it was definitely a struggle to get everything done, especially if something goes wrong.”

“The competition has been very intense but it has been fun and I would love to enter the international Wella competition if I ever got the chance after I graduate.”

Ferina Ah Kuoi is another student who participated in today’s competition and says, “It has been a very stressful day and it gets so hot in the salon that it’s easy to get flustered but I’m glad I did it and I am really happy with how its turned out.”

“Last year I did the beauty course at MIT and before that I did a business management course but after spending four weeks sitting at a desk I knew it wasn’t the job for me,” she says.

The winner of the Wella Trends Vision Awards competition for 2013 will be announced in the Manukau Institute of Technology’s salon on November 12.
