Successful Kapiti MBA course to be repeated
October 31, 2013
An innovative Massey Executive MBA paper which brought 28 executive students from all over the country together with five Kapiti/Horowhenua businesses in an intense three-day programme, looks likely to be repeated over the next few years.
Electra Chair Trish McKelvey says the likely inclusion of a top-level MBA programme in the on-going business development of the area is “great news for both districts’.
“Excellent local businesses contribute to the creation of strong local communities and that’s good for everyone. This was an excellent programme; the work done over the weekend was exciting, and the outcomes for both the businesses and the executives look very good,” she says.
Nineteen Kapiti/Horowhenua businesses submitted applications for the course, which was held at the new Kapiti Airport, (October 18-21) as part of a regional growth initiative arising from Electra’s Business Forum earlier in the year. It was organised by the Massey University College of Business, and the Kapiti Company with sponsorship from Electra and input from both the Kapiti and Horowhenua District Councils.
The Programme was led by Professor Hamish Gow and fellow MBA teaching staff who selected five businesses: Genoese Foods, Coral Tree Organics, Mowbray Collectables, Paula’s Furniture & Beds and GTB It Solutions to attend.
The course divided into five teams and began on Friday morning with all five businesses making a presentation to the group. Executives then worked with each company to develop and deliver a “business pitch” by Sunday afternoon.
The executives are now writing a comprehensive report for each business including: a business restructuring plan, a feasibility analysis and implementation plan.
Trish McKelvey says Electra has “a vital long-term interest” in business and employment growth in Kapiti and Horowhenua and the Massey MBA programme –fits nicely with our Business Awards and monthly Business Breakfasts.
