Whangarei Girls High Student wins Project Runway Upcycling
Whangarei Girls High student Chloe King is
the winner of the recent NorthTec’s Project Runway
Upcycling – a three-day project which required entrants to
create new garments out of pre-loved clothes.
Kamo High School’s Evelyn Taylor was second and Maria Riegel from Pompallier College came in third.
NorthTec Fashion design tutor Edele Macdonald said she was thrilled with the girls' creations and the imagination and effort put into the project.
“It went really, really well. It was mad busy, but the girls really enjoyed it," Edele says.
“All five entrants have demonstrated that we have some fine young fashion design talent in the Northland. Hopefully it inspires others to follow suit in the future.”
Chloe won a dressmaker’s mannequin and is now keen to pursue a career in costume design.
Her design was a dress upcycled from a pair of men’s pants teamed with a jacket that she transformed to bring it up to date.
Voting was open to the public and hundreds of online votes were received. Weighting was allocated to judges’ votes and public vote which led to the final result.
The other finalists were Grace Ligairi from Tikipunga High and Bree Martinac from Tauraroa Area School.
