Visual treat awaits at Edith Gallery

Members of the public have an opportunity to look into the complex and often beautiful world of the photographic image at the Whanganui UCOL Fine Arts Photography exhibition, Photosynthesis 2013, which opens this week at the Edith Gallery.

Photosynthesis features creative applications of photography by Whanganui UCOL Fine Arts students and lecturers.

The biennial exhibition is coordinated and presented by photography students and staff in the Quay School of Arts Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree. Artists were invited to enter their work, with an emphasis on “using photography outside the normal parameters”.

UCOL Photography lecturer Cecelia Kumeroa says a variety of entries have been received, showcasing a range of techniques. This includes Pinholes, Holga (plastic camera images), photo collage, hand-tinted photos, kodaliths and digital images that involve the photographer in post-production processes and digital techniques.

Photosynthesis runs in concurrence with the second year BFA students’ exhibition Worlds at the Edith Gallery.

Cecelia says it is an excellent opportunity for students to exhibit their hard work and also gives the public a chance to appreciate the spectrum of creative photographic work that is made possible by using modern and revived, traditional photographic techniques and processes.

“The point of difference with this exhibition is that not many places offer traditional darkroom processes to their students at tertiary level, so there is a unique quality to the works that cannot be attained by digital processes,” says Cecelia.

Photosynthesis and Worlds open on Wednesday, 23 October at 5:00pm at the Edith Gallery, at 24 Taupo Quay, Whanganui UCOL. The exhibition continues through to 3 November.

Much of the work is for sale, everyone is welcome.
