Wellington and Christchurch Employers meet WelTec's graduates
Construction and Engineering employers from Wellington and The Canterbury Skills and Employment Hub from Christchurch
converged on WelTec’s Petone campus yesterday to recruit from the latest cohort of construction and engineering
graduating students.
WelTec’s contribution to securing work for graduates was in sharp focus yesterday with more than 140 construction
students from WelTec and Whitireia attending a function at WelTec’s Petone campus. More than a dozen employers with job
offers attended including the Canterbury Skills and Employment Hub who sent two staff to recruit for jobs in
Christchurch. The Canterbury Hub advised it had 482 vacancies currently available and was particularly interested in
recruiting for the trades.
Feedback from employers and others who attended was very positive with many connections made on the day being followed
up for job offers or cadetships which will enable students to complete their studies while working.
WelTec’s Jobs Broker Arnold Lomax was thrilled with the event. “This will be life changing for many of our young
graduates who are seeking to get a foot in the door with an employer whether that’s in Wellington or elsewhere.
“I’m fielding 3 or 4 calls every day from employers from Wellington and Christchurch looking for skilled people. Over
the last fortnight I have referred students for jobs in quantity surveying, drafting, engineering, carpentry,
scaffolding, painting and decorating. We have also had a number of engineering, IT and construction cadetships become
available,” said Arnold Lomax.
