Last chance to enter national short film competition
New Zealand secondary school students have two weeks to get their entries in for the country’s biggest short film
competition, Cut!.
Cut! - run by the Waikato Institute of Technology’s (Wintec) School of Media Arts - is now in its 10th year.
Films can be documentary style or fiction, on any topic and should be between four and six minutes.
Margi Moore, head of Wintec’s School of Media Arts, says the competition provides a great opportunity for students to
get experience, show off their skills and get personal feedback from judges.
Ten finalists will be selected and their films shown at a public award screening, held at Wintec’s Bill Gallagher Centre
in Hamilton at 3pm, Saturday October 19. The screening is free and open to all.
Awards will be presented for Best Film, Best Director, Best Story, Best Animator and Best Editor.
A range of prizes are on offer, including a one-year Wintec School of Media Arts scholarship and prizes from United
Sweets, Protel and Ricoh.
Two free workshops will be held before the screening on Saturday October 19 – screenwriting at 11am and acting and
directing at 1pm. These will be held in Wintec’s Bill Gallagher Event Centre and are open to all secondary students. To

About the judges
1.Producer, Sally-Ann Louisson, has worked on films including Spartacus, Prince Caspian and Babe.
2.Andrea Haines is on the NZ Film Festival Trust Board and is a past president of the New Zealand Federation of Film
Societies.
3.Charlie McClellan is an Auckland-based visual effects supervisor, producer and filmmaker with over 20 years of
experience in the industry. In 2010 he won the Qantas Film and TV award in NZ for Best Visual Effects on Under the
Mountain.
4.Actor, Jesse-James Pickery, appeared on Shortland Street as Angel Souza and recently took the lead role in feature
Orphans and Kingdoms.
5.Julia Reynolds is a Waikato filmmaker and lecturer, and is currently completing a PhD.
