Rising star raises her colours
UCOL Diploma in Interior Design student Sally Rogers knows a thing or two about colour, and she has a trophy to prove
it.
Sally was named the Rising Star in the Resene Total Colour Awards 2013 last week, brushing aside other aspiring interior
design and architectural design students from around the country who submitted their student design projects.
Sally won the coveted award and $1000 prize money with her take on Rustic Meets Country - Country Man and His City
Woman. “Our class was visited by a ‘client’ and for our project we were required to design an interior look for her
1920’s bungalow,” says Sally.
Her colour palette of Resene Twine, Putty and Moroccan Spice was complemented by clever soft furnishings, flooring and
furniture for the living areas.
Sally has been a Graphic Designer for 20 years. “I felt like I wanted to do something new but in a related field.” Her
computer design skills have come in handy during the preparation of her project.
“Interior Design is about more than colour,” says Sally. “There is texture and pattern, not to mention ensuring a
material is fit for purpose. There is a lot to learn.”
Sally is studying towards her Diploma part time and also works at a local interior design store. “I love working with
clients and turning their thought bubble into something real.”
UCOL Programme Leader in Interior Design Janine Fenelon says Sally’s lecturers and classmates are all celebrating in her
success.
“We really appreciate the support Resene gives our Interior Design students with events like this,” she says.

The Diploma in Interior Design programme covers all aspects of residential interior design, including: colour, the
history of interior design, furnishings, drafting, CAD, design theory, ergonomics, kitchen and bathroom design, building
technology, materials, finishes and lighting.
Students will also learn about what’s involved in a professional design practice. Graduates may find work as
self-employed design consultants, as consultants in retail outlets or as a consultant for architects, spec-house
builders and kitchen designers.
