MEDIA RELEASE: Daltons helps kindy kids grow
Date: Monday 2nd September 2013
Local kindergartens across the community are enthusiastically about to start growing their very own sunflowers, thanks to the Daltons Sunflowers in Kindy’s project.  For some of these kids it will be the first time they have ever grown anything and excitement is rife in the local kindy’s!  Daltons has partnered exclusively with regional Kindergarten Associations in order to bring kids this opportunity and teach them how plants grow.  The project is supported by teaching tools to help teachers with the success of the project.
At the end of the project each Kindergarten will nominate a 'Daltons Best Gardener' which will be the child who's commitment to the project stood out the most, such as the most diligent watering or most enthusiastic gardener and they receive a special prize.  There will also be a prize pack for the Kindergarten in each region for The Tallest Sunflower, The Sunflower with the widest head and the opportunity to win a gardening workshop with TV personality and award winning landscape designer Xanthe White.
The Daltons Sunflowers in Kindy’s project provides great learning opportunities for kindy kids by helping them develop their gardening skills for life, understand how a plant grows from tiny seeds to flourishing flowers, and even exposes them to numbers and basic maths through regularly measuring and recording their plants growth.  Colin Parker from Daltons said “We enjoy coming up with initiatives that support the next generation of gardeners.  Gardening skills and knowledge used to be something that was passed down through the generations in families, but these days this is not the case.  At Daltons we believe that working with Kindergartens on projects such as this ensures that children are given the opportunity to learn skills and knowledge about gardening without missing out”.

The Daltons Sunflowers in Kindy project is a pilot programme this year and only running in selected regions of New Zealand for 2013.
