Scots hosts inaugural Wellington Band and Orchestra Festival

Next weekend, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August, Scots College Music Department is hosting the Inaugural Wellington Band and Orchestra Festival (WeBO). The event has attracted registrations from 16 ensembles from around the country, including 100 musicians from Burnside HS in Christchurch who will be coming up to perform.

WeBO celebrates music-making by New Zealand’s school and community Concert Bands, Orchestras, Big Bands and Jazz Combos. Although promoting and focusing on bands and orchestras in the Wellington region, WeBO is open to any band or orchestra from around New Zealand.

NZSO adjudicators Peter Maunder and Kenneth Young will provide each ensemble with feedback and every group will be able to record a piece in the College’s state of the art recording studio.

Event organizer and Head of Music at Scots College Andrew Stopps, created the festival with the intention to create a non-competitive atmosphere that provides a place for growth, cooperative encouragement and mutual respect among bands and orchestras, students, parents, music directors and teachers. ‘This event is about school and community musicians getting together, performing for each other and making new friends. It also provides the lower North Island and South Island with a Festival that is more accessible.’ enthuses Stopps.

Scots College has three of ensembles performing, the Jazz Band (Sunday 11am), Sam’s Jazz Combo (Saturday 3pm) and the Studio Orchestra (Sunday 2.30).

This type of Festival is a first in Wellington and it’s free entry to the public. The community is welcome to come and listen to some wonderful music by school and community orchestras and concert bands. For a timetable of performances and more information go to www.webo.co.nz
