Boys Achievement Statistics Flawed for Wellington Institute of Technology
PRESS RELEASE
12 August 2013
Referring to an article published in The Dom Post today, Boys slip further in school's co-ed class, Linda Sissons, Chief Executive of the Wellington Institute of Technology commented, “The article refers to the
achievement statistics for 5 boys studying with the Wellington Trades Academy and representing this as 60% not achieved
for NCEA level 3 is flawed.
“Our achievement rates for all dual enrolled* students are 89% for NCEA level 2 which is higher than the national
average of 84% achievement in 2012.
“WelTec is contracted to provide level 2 NCEA to students studying with the Wellington Trades Academy. If students
achieve level 3 NCEA that’s a bonus. Of the 5 boys who had some credits towards level 3 in 2012, 2 were awarded NCEA
levels 2 and 3, 2 achieved level 2 NCEA and 1 is now studying at level 4. This is actually a success story. Furthermore,
81% of the 58 boys who studied with the Trades Academy in 2012 achieved NCEA level 2, above the national average of 80%
for Year 12 boys in 2012.
“The Wellington Institute of Technology has the second highest course completion rate in New Zealand. So we are doing a
really good job for our students, especially young men who constitute a majority of our students,” says Linda Sissons
