Shoppers asked to vote on budding jewellers’ work

Jewellery design students from Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) will be displaying their work at the Westfield Manukau shopping centre as part of a competition being run by local jeweller and manufacturer, Neville Jordon.

Five students studying the MIT Diploma in Jewellery Manufacture and Design (Level 5) will display their work in the window of Neville Jordan Jewellers for one week from August 19 to 25 as part of a People’s Choice Jewellery Competition.

Shoppers are being encouraged to check out their work and to take part in the competition by voting for their favourite jeweller by filling in a voting ballot at the Neville Jordon Jewellers store in Westfield Manukau.

This is the second year the competition has been run and Mary Curtis, a Senior Lecturer in Jewellery at MIT’s Faculty of Creative Arts says it was instigated by Neville Jordon.

“Neville wanted to support the new jewellers and makers that we had coming through MIT’s jewellery programmes,” says Mary Curtis.

“It’s a great opportunity for our students to get exposure for their work and to build their confidence by getting their work on display in the public domain,” she says.

“It’s also a chance to expand their networks and to gain valuable industry connections as Neville also has a manufacturing business as well as the shop in Westfield, Manukau.”

The students are studying both contemporary and traditional jewellery practice. Each student will display a range of work from the first semester. These include two pieces of jewellery that are visually different but each house exactly the same object; a piece designed for an object they were given by Mary Curtis and had to create a composition for; and piece that is ‘worthy of our attention’.

The winner of the Neville Jordon Jewellery People’s Choice Awards will be announced once voting is closed with the top two students winning a watch from the store’s “Ice-Watch” range.

MIT offers three qualifications in jewellery practice. A Level 4 Certificate in Jewellery Techniques; a Level 5 Diploma in Jewellery Manufacture and Design and a Level 6 Diploma in Advanced Jewellery practice.
