Action4Peace: Making a difference in our community
Schools all over New Zealand are invited to participate in the Schools' Peace Week, a national campaign aiming to raise
awareness about peace education and building peaceful communities. More than 60 schools nationwide have already
registered for the annual event being held from 5-9 August 2013.
Organised by The Peace Foundation, the theme for this year's Schools' Peace Week is -- Action4Peace: Making a difference
in our community'. The goal with this campaign is to get students motivated in promoting peace through action and a
range of creative and fun activities.
Schools' Peace Week is designed especially to help schools educate students about peace issues and is one of The Peace
Foundation's biggest campaigns and contributions to the UN Decade for Peace and Non-Violence for Children.
One of the participating schools, Mt Roskill Grammar School (MRGS), has been involved in the Peace Week campaign for the
last eight years. "Peace week is extremely important at MRGS as it engages the whole school in the bigger vision of
creating and supporting peace within and outside our community. It helps break down the barriers of prejudice, conflict
and misunderstanding," says MRGS Counsellor and Mediation Coordinator, Donna Hourigan-Johnston.
The Peace Foundation has assembled the 'Peace Week Action Kit', a handy guide for teachers and students of primary and
secondary schools, containing ideas on inspirational activities for this event.
