Improved Career Development for Youth 15 July 2013
Waiariki Institute of Technology and Careers New Zealand have signalled they are fully committed to working together to
improve career development for young people which will flow into industry.
The two organisations confirmed their partnership with a Memorandum of Understanding signing by Waiariki Chief Executive
Professor Margaret Noble and Careers New Zealand Chief Executive Dr Graeme Benny during their partnership launch in
Rotorua today
“It’s not so much the signing of the MOU that is important, but the improvements in career development for young Rotorua
people and the benefits for industry that will result from it,” says Dr Benny.
“As a leading tertiary institution, Waiariki aims to improve student outcomes and transitions to employment by
implementing a range of employability initiatives including a learner coaching programme,” says Professor Noble.
“These will advance the development and implementation of the career literacy strategy across Waiariki.”
By working more collaboratively, educators, industry and employers can have a more effective understanding of the local
labour market and its supply and demand needs.
The community plays a role in building the career management skills of the people of Rotorua, especially its students,
so they can make informed career decisions and develop their skills throughout their lives.
“This new partnership is an excellent opportunity for Careers New Zealand to work with Waiariki Institute of Technology
to help their students become competent career decision makers and planners for the rest of their lives, bringing
benefits to Rotorua and to the country as a whole,” says Dr Benny.
Careers New Zealand will support Waiariki to enhance their career development practise using Career New Zealand’s Career
Development Benchmarks – Tertiary. The work programme will include advice and assistance to senior staff, professional
development of Waiariki staff, and raising the profile of career development information and resources across Waiariki.
