Will New Zealand’s next Master Chef be found at MIT?

Future hospitality stars will get the chance to show their skills and compete for some great prizes at Manukau Institute of Technology’s Secondary Schools Hospitality Competition this week.

The competition is open to year 11–13 secondary school students and 70 entries have been received for the event which is being held at Manukau Institute of Technology’s School of Culinary and Hospitality in their fully equipped production kitchens on June 26.

More than 70 entries have been received from 10 schools in the Auckland region including Manurewa High School, Mt Albert Grammar, Mt Roskill Grammar, Papakura High School, Long Bay College, Aorere College, Lynfield College, Onehunga High School, Scared Heart College and Botany Downs Secondary College.

Manukau Institute of Technology’s Dean of the Faculty of Consumer Services, Cherie Freeman says, “The competition aims to give students confidence and experience of real working conditions and to promote hospitality and culinary as a future career option.”

The participants will compete under a number of different categories: Live Cup Cakes; Pasta Dish; Innovative Wraps; Innovative Table Setting; Barista Competition and Smoothies.

The competition also includes the prestigious Auckland Regional City Guilds Team Challenge where teams of two competitors must produce four portions of an entrée and four courses of a main course within 90 minutes.

The winner will go on to compete at the National City Guilds Team Challenge being hosted at Manukau Institute of Technology on September 23 which has a top prize of $2000 donation towards fees for further training.
