Professor Michael Omolewa to Speak at 2013 ACE Conference
Emeritus Professor Michael Omolewa, a leading figure in Nigeria’s academic community and UNESCO will give a keynote
address at this year’s Australasian Adult and Community Education (ACE) Conference in Wellington, June 18-20.
Professor Omolewa will spend a week in New Zealand before the conference meeting government and UNESCO officials,
visiting education programmes and speaking at a Parliamentary Breakfast.
This year’s Adult and Community Education (ACE) Conference is the first collaboration between Australia and New
Zealand’s community education sectors. It’s theme Confident Communities Hāpori Tū Rangatira will explore the relationship between adult education and active citizenship.
Keynote speakers Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi and Aboriginal Educator Tony Dreise will share the stage with Michael
Omolewa presenting their visions for communities in which all citizens are empowered through education.
Conference workshops will explore what it means to be an active citizen in a variety of contexts –Māori, Aboriginal,
Pasifika, Australian, Pakeha New Zealand and globally. Workshops will also explore innovation in learning and teaching.
There are over 8000 ACE programmes throughout Aotearoa offering literacy, numeracy, computer skills, technical, life and
leisure skills in a variety of settings. Many learners have previously had negative learning experiences and benefit
from the learner - centred approaches offered by ACE practitioners in community halls, homes, schools and on marae.
Annual Awards will for the first time acknowledge ACE Sector organisations, programmes, practitioners and members who
have been recognised by their peers for their special contributions to learning, teaching and support for adult learners
in Aotearoa.
