Last year’s inaugural Design Distinctions Awards were such a success, they have been made even bigger.

A collaboration involving EIT Hawke’s Bay’s ideaschool, UCOL and the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, the dDawards were created as a design challenge for secondary schools in each polytechnic’s region.

Because the awards were so keenly contested last year, the three design schools have introduced a tertiary category.

Based around the V48Hour Film Festival format, the dDawards involve designing marketing collateral for a local cause or event. The theme for this year’s campaign is still a closely guarded secret, but all will be revealed for the competition, which will be held over the weekend 14-16 June.

Participating students must be 16 years or older and register through the website www.ddawards.ac.nz

Over the competition weekend, competing designers will have access to resources at EIT’s ideaschool. They are required to submit a digital copy of their work for judging within the tight 48-hour time limit.

All submissions will be judged and graded and there will be bronze, silver and gold awards for secondary school and tertiary categories. Hawke’s Bay’s top school student and the top tertiary student will each receive an iPad mini, and from the regions’ top award-winners, an overall winner will be named.

The UCOL-sponsored overall winner prize is the ultimate designer weekend for two, which will include tickets to the Semi-Permanent Design Conference in Auckland, with accommodation for three nights and return air travel.

The secondary school in each region with the highest number of entries will also receive an iPad mini.
