Ministry working with Paeroa School to resolve enrolment

Ministry working with Paeroa School to resolve enrolment

The Ministry of Education will meet Paeroa School principal and members of its board to resolve issues involving the enrolment of an 11-year-old student with severe behavioural problems.

Special Education, Group Manager, Brian Coffey says he understands the concerns of Paeroa Central School.

“Bad behaviour, in whatever form, is unacceptable, particularly if targeted at teachers or other authority figures.

“The student is legally required to be enrolled and his local school offers the best chance he has for gaining the stability he needs.

“Specially-trained Ministry staff work with hundreds of students with severe behaviour problems every day and we are confident we are able to manage his behaviour.

“Last year, the Intensive Wraparound Service worked with nine students who had been excluded from their school. Eight of these students have since been successfully re-enrolled in their local school.

“There is a place for this child at an Alternative Education centre and we will gradually integrate him back into Paeroa School. A support plan will be in place to support him at school, in the community, and at home.

“We will continue to work with the school, his family and all other relevant agencies, including the police and child youth and family, to ensure he gets the opportunity he needs in a way that secures the safety of the people around him.”
