Funding for Christchurch education staff welcomed
NZEI Te Riu Roa says it welcomes the $10 million extra funding announced in the Budget for support for teachers and school support staff in Christchurch.
NZEI National President Judith Nowotarski says teachers and support staff have been put under enormous stress because of the earthquake and the Ministry of Education’s handling of the Christchurch renewal programme.
“NZEI has been calling for this support package for some time.”
“We hope that this will go some way to maintaining a high quality workforce and allowing it to be focussed on achieving educational outcomes for Christchurch children.
“It is also a welcome recognition of the difficult situation that staff have been working under.
It’s expected that the money will go towards relief teaching and support staff assistance.
