Who's Standing For Your School Board of Trustees?
Do You Know Who Is Standing For Your School Board of Trustees?
People in your community are nominating themselves or someone else to become a significant part of your school as a result of the 2013 school trustee elections process. Nominations close at noon on 16th May, and there is still time for parents and members of the community to put their name forward.
National Election Project Manager, Elaine Hines says “Although many people have been nominated, schools still need more people to stand for election. The sooner the better! It would be fantastic if every school had more candidates than positions which would mean the community needed to vote ”
The role of school trustees is a significant one with responsibility for setting the strategic direction of the school, monitoring progress and reporting on the performance of its students to the parent community.
“For this reason we need people with the right skills, who want to make a positive difference to our children’s learning, and who are there to act in the best interests of all students at the school, says Elaine.”
“We need parents, families and whānau to all get involved and take an active part in their school election process. This is the best way to ensure they get the highest quality trustees for their school.”
Now is the time to step forward and nominate yourself or someone else you think would make a positive contribution to your school and ultimately your child’s education.
Over 100,000 people have taken on the trusteeship roles since self managing schools were introduced in 1989. A recent survey shows 65% of current trustees are looking to stand for another three years, but there are still high numbers of new trustees needed.
We know that 95% of trustees describe their experience as a school trustee as very positive or positive, and with 90% of trustees considering that the time on the board had benefited them in terms of personal growth. 98% say they would not only recommend school trusteeship, but would encourage others to stand”.
Anybody interested in finding out more should contact their local school further information.
