Trustee Organisation Delighted with Increased Board Support

NZ School Trustees Association : Trustee Organisation Delighted with Announcement of Increased Board Support

"The New Zealand School Trustees Association (NZSTA) is delighted at the Minister of Education's announcement that Budget 2013 will provide for an additional $14.5M over four years to support boards of trustees" says Lorraine Kerr, President, NZSTA.

"NZSTA has been arguing the case for better support for boards of trustees for a number of years now, and especially given that research shows that excellent governance by boards of trustees can, and does, make a difference to outcomes for students.

"We are pleased that the Minister Parata, and Government, has clearly recognised the value that greater parent involvement in education can bring , and has taken steps to target investment in all of those areas that contribute to lifting achievement; and we certainly welcome that investment" says Lorraine Kerr.

NZSTA also welcomes the chance of engaging with the Minister and Ministry regarding the best way NZSTA can best support boards of trustees with this additional funding.

Lorraine Kerr says that boards of trustees have, for far too many years now, received minimal support in their critical governance role and this announcement of significantly increased support by Minister Parata will be especially welcomed by all those potential boards members who are standing for their local school board in the current trustee triennial election.

The contribution that parents/caregivers and members of the school community make to their school through standing for, and being elected, to undertake the trusteeship governance role is huge, and critically important to ensuring that the goal of all students having the opportunity to achieve to their potential.

"We congratulate the Minister of Education, the Hon Hekia Parata and Government on this forward-thinking initiative" says Ms Kerr, and look forward to working even more closely with boards of trustees to support them in the effective governance of their schools. This will help to ensure ongoing improvement in school performance and ultimately in student progress and achievement outcomes.
