3 in 1 milestone for Christchurch: St Margaret’s College to open major facilities
Christchurch, 7 May 2013 - Three significant facilities for Christchurch have been completed at St Margaret's College.
The first church, first auditorium and first gymnasium to be built in Christchurch following the devastating earthquakes
will be officially opened on Monday 13 May by New Zealand's Governor-General Lt. Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae.
St Margaret’s College lost 80% of their campus in the earthquakes.
Executive Principal Gillian Simpson says, “We have an unique and innovative new space that houses three facilities in
one building. The school has had some fantastic support from the both the school community and wider community to get to
this point. They have backed our vision of being a leading 21st century school with world class facilities.”
Simpson says the school plans to share the facilities with the wider Christchurch community to support the 103 year old
school's ethos of inclusiveness and community spirit. “We already have groups using our other new spaces. We look
forward to sharing these new performance and sporting areas.”
With the opening of these new facilities the school has completed around 7,000sqm of building - more than half of their
campus development plan. In February the school opened an impressive new library, e learning centre - and classroom
block - another first for Christchurch.
The opening of this super 3 in 1 complex marks a busy week for St Margaret’s College. The school is holding its Open Day
on Monday 13 May from 10.30am to 1.30pm, with the Principal’s address at 11.45am.
A Concert of Celebration will also be held in its newly built auditorium - named The Charles Luney Auditorium on
Thursday 16 May at 7.00pm. Tickets for this special event, to mark the opening of the new facilities, can be purchased
through the Court Theatre.
