Whanganui UCOL gets closer to schools

Whanganui UCOL will be more accessible than ever to their future students with the launch of a new webpage for school career advisors early next month.

Schools’ Link will become live at an official launch on Wednesday 8 May at Whanganui UCOL from 9.30am - 11.30am.

Used in conjunction with Moodle, the Schools’ Link page is designed to give careers advisors a direct link to ‘life at UCOL’ and ‘a taste of tertiary’ and information on the U-Skills and Youth Guarantee Schemes.

Moodle is an internet based system for delivering e-Learning programmes for educational and training organisations. Its users range from universities, polytechnics, primary and high schools and hospitals.

Moodle was introduced to UCOL’s three campuses in Palmerston North, Whanganui and Wairarapa in 2007.

UCOL External Relations Coordinator Katarina Hina says Schools’ Link has been developed with UCOL’s STAR Coordinator Debbie Smith and E-Learning experts Kevin Brennan and Cheryl Tyler.

In conjunction with the launch, Katrina Mayo, Careers New Zealand’s advisor, will also discuss the concept of personal branding, marketing yourself online and tools and resources available for creating a 21st century C.V.

Schools’ Link is the first of its kind to bring a tertiary institution and careers advisors so closely together via Moodle.

“We want more young people moving successfully from school into tertiary education. It’s about improving pathways and transitions,” says Katarina.

Eight Whanganui schools are involved in the launch of this new initiative that offers opportunities for professional development and direct contact with UCOL.

Wanganui Collegiate School, Cullinane College, Wanganui Girls’ College, Wanganui City College, St Dominics College, The Correspondence School, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Tupoho and Te Kura Maori o Kokohuia have registered their participation in Schools’ Link.
