Vocational pathways a step in the right direction

Vocational pathways a step in the right direction

Today’s announcement by Minister Joyce on the Vocational Pathways will be welcome by the hospitality industry, says Hospitality New Zealand Chief Executive Bruce Robertson. The recognition that a career in the hospitality sector is worthwhile and that there’s a training pathway flowing through from secondary schools provides students and parents with confidence that there are other career options than simply going off to university. The online tool allows students and their parents to select programmes which will actually lead to a career, rather than just getting NCEA.

Many schools are already running hospitality programmes and the pathway provides an excellent linkage to the on and off the job training available when students leave school. Just as importantly, the on the job training provided via the hospitality industry’s training organisation Service IQ means students can work while they gain qualifications with the potential to lead them to become top chefs, hoteliers and hospitality business owners, said Mr Robertson.
