NorthTec ITaB Carpentry Apprentice Challenge is on
NorthTec ITaB Carpentry Apprentice Challenge is on!
The annual NorthTec Industry Training Association Building (ITaB) regional Carpentry Apprentice Challenge will take place on Saturday 23rd March at Future Trades on Dyer Street, Whangarei.
All entrants have to either be employed by a Certified Builder or be a current ITaB student. There is no age restriction to the eight-hour regional event.
“This year we have six entrants, selected by NorthTec tutors from application forms filled out by the eligible apprentices,” says Carpentry tutor Mark Pearson.
Apprentice challenge participants for 2013 are: Scott Irving (Pete Brown Builders); Mark Gray (Pete Brown Builders); Brendon Williams (Campbell Lee Construction); Yates Gordon (Bell Construction); Brodie Crum (Complete Building Services) and Mike Ferris (Dave Millar Builders).
“The regional challenge this year involves building three walls, cladding them with weatherboard and correctly fitting and weather proofing a window. Competing entrants have eight hours to complete the task and all regions hold an identical challenge with identical judging criteria for consistency right across the country,” says Mr Pearson.
The winner of the challenge, as judged by a panel of Certified Builders and tutors, wins an all-expenses paid trip to the Certified Builders Association New Zealand (CBANZ) conference in Blenheim in May and it includes a package of adventure activities at the top of the south Island.
Each CBANZ region provides one winner for the national final. Regional winners are expected to introduce guest speakers at the CBANZ national conference and take part in an interview before the board of the Apprentice Scholarship Trust which selects the national winner.
All participants will also receive a gift pack supplied by CBANZ and local sponsors, as well as a certificate of participation.
NorthTec and ITaB encourage employers, family, friends and the public to drop by at Future Trades on the day to support the challenge finalists.
