EIT Counselling Clinic Underway
EIT’s counselling clinic is open for the year, and offering its free service to people who could benefit from therapeutic help.
Counselling can help people work through a range of problems – depression, anxiety, stress, relationship concerns, life transitions, grief and loss. It may also help fulfil aspirations for personal growth, purpose and potential.
Clinic sessions are offered five days a week, Monday to Friday, on the Hawke’s Bay campus and at EIT’s Learning Centre in Hastings. They are staffed by senior students of the Bachelor of Applied Social Sciences who are closely supervised by highly experienced counsellors.
All the senior students have previously worked in counselling situations with people from the wider community. A counselling session lasts about an hour and no limit is placed on the number of sessions. In each case, a client is assigned a dedicated student counsellor for sessions held in a private room.
The students are required to undertake 200 hours of face-to-face counselling to be eligible for membership of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors under whose guidelines and ethics they practise.
EIT has offered the counselling service for more than 10 years. This year’s clinic is already underway and counselling stream coordinator Tim Mapel says students and staff are looking forward to welcoming and helping more clients.
