New location working well for Kāpiti campus

New location working well for Kāpiti campus

Whitireia in Kāpiti has been operating from its new campus on the corner of Milne Drive and Kapiti Road for a year. February last year saw the official opening of the new start-of-the art campus which provides tertiary education study opportunities for students in the Kāpiti region.

Campus and student life are now firmly cemented at the Kapiti Road location that houses Whitireia in Kāpiti. Around 290 students studied at Kāpiti last year with around 300 student’s, expected to study there this year.

The new campus location is proving popular for students said Don Campbell, Chief Executive, Whitireia New Zealand. “Its central location and the modern learning environment make this campus a popular choice for local students. We are pleased that the campus has become a community venue also and is being used to support various local community events. Our vision was to create a great 21st century student and community hub – over the past year we feel we have achieved this vision” he said.

Kāpiti Coast District Council has joined forces with the Whitireia Foundation to offer a scholarship to a Kāpiti student this year. The Council is very supportive of Whitireia and increasing education opportunities for the districts young people and have offered a scholarship to the value of $2,500. This scholarship will be awarded to a student studying at the Kāpiti campus; it will go a long way in assisting a student who might not otherwise have the opportunity to study at Whitireia.

This scholarship and the Kāpiti campus provide great tertiary training opportunities for local students said Roger Sowry, Council Chair. “We want to be educating more of our younger people up in Kāpiti so they don’t have to travel into town so having an attractive learning environment and a scholarship available makes studying in Kāpiti an attractive proposition for them” he said.

Several client days were held at the campus over the last year. This provided an opportunity for the community to come in and try out the food, coffee and service from the training restaurant, have their hair done in the training hair salon or a beauty treatment in the beauty salon. The client days have been well received and supported by the community. Similar opportunities will be available at the campus throughout 2013.

We are committed to the Kāpiti community said Campbell. “This campus is an asset for them. We are proud of the opportunities we are providing locally in terms of tertiary training and look forward to many Kāpiti residents studying at our state-of-the-art education facility, one that has cemented itself well, into the local landscape”.

This year a range of certificate and diploma level programmes are being offered from Whitireia in Kāpiti. Programmes such as Professional Cookery, Office Administration and Computing, Outdoor Adventure, Hospitality and Tourism, Carpentry, Photography, Café Services, Beauty and Hairdressing, Foundation Education and Youth Guarantee will be available as study options to students.
