Scholarships pay homage to nurse’s
dreams
Japanese student Rika Hyuga was committed to
practising nursing in New Zealand. Now a fund established in
her name by her parents will ensure that others with similar
passion for nursing have the opportunity to follow their
dreams.
Rika died in the CTV building in the 22 February 2011 earthquake. She was a nurse who was studying English so that she could practise nursing in New Zealand.
Rika’s father will be in Christchurch for the second anniversary of the earthquake and will present the Rika Fund scholarships to the first six recipients at CPIT on 25 February at a 10am morning tea.
Mr Hyuga wanted to continue Rika’s dream of practising nursing in New Zealand. Accordingly, many of the initial recipients have demonstrated a passion for nursing, the resilience to overcome personal challenges and a willingness to work hard to achieve their goals.
“We are grateful for the generosity of Mr and Mrs Hyuga, which will help students who are similarly committed and focused to achieve their dreams. We stand beside this family in their loss and applaud their ability to bring something positive to others in their daughter’s name,” CPIT International Director Beth Knowles said.
The
scholarships will be awarded twice a year to students
enrolled in CPIT nursing or Bachelor of Language in Japanese
programmes. Initial recipients included four nursing
students who received a $2000 contribution towards their
studies and two Japanese language students who received
airfares to Japan where they are embarking on one-year
exchange programmes.
