UCOL-WDC Taskforce Governance Group
Mayor Annette Main was elected chair of the Joint Wanganui District Council/UCOL Taskforce Governance Group at its first meeting on Monday 11 February. The other members of the Governance Group are UCOL Chair Trevor Goodwin, UCOL Councillors Malcolm Inglis and Pamela Jefferies, and District Councillors Philippa Baker-Hogan and Sue Westwood.
The Taskforce has been formed to determine community ambitions for sustainable and relevant tertiary education in the district and identify opportunities for the future.
The first priority for the Governance Group is to establish four Working Parties from members of the community who can generate workable ideas in four areas and make recommendations to the Governance Group. The four areas are Fine Arts and Glass education, the provision of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education, the provision of training to those not engaged in employment, education or training (NEETs) and UCOL/Whanganui Community connections.
“We have many talented and respected people in our Region who have offered or have been suggested by others to help us with this task,” said Mayor Annette Main. “We hope they will have the time to share their knowledge and ideas with us through the working parties.”
“Solid community input is needed from the four working parties to enable them to generate workable suggestions for the Taskforce to consider,” said UCOL Chair Trevor Goodwin. “The timelines are short and the first meeting of the Working Parties is scheduled for next week”. It is planned that the Working Parties will have completed their input by early April this year.
