Wellington Trades Academy Student Excels
Gaining valuable work-place skills through the Wellington Trades Academy while still enrolled at secondary school has led to early success for Rebecca Rothwell.
Rebecca will be joining 30 of her fellow Trades Academy “class of 2012” at the WelTec graduation ceremony to be held at the Michael Fowler Centre this evening.
Rebecca, an ex-St Mary’s College student from Wainuiomata, says she is excited to graduate from the Wellington Trades Academy. Rebecca’s academic excellence will also be recognised through a scholarship enabling her to go onto further study this year.
Ms Rothwell was able to study a Certificate in Hairdressing and Beauty Services at the Wellington Trades Academy while still being enrolled at St Mary’s College last year. “I have a goal of finding an apprenticeship in the workplace and I’m getting closer to that. Before coming to WelTec I didn’t find staying at school was right for me as I didn’t enjoy the subjects,” says Ms Rothwell.
Ms Rothwell says she will be delighted to receive recognition of her year with the Wellington Trades Academy. She spent last year really putting her study in practice through experiences like working at the World of Wearable Art Award Show, while still being able to participate in the sports and social areas at St Mary’s.
“Being part of WOW was so cool and exciting. I found the staff at WelTec and the Trades Academy were very helpful on my course and I was learning about something I really wanted to do. At the same time I could still play volleyball for my school with my friends.”
Rebecca will continue her studies in hairdressing at WelTec in the Wellington CBD campus at Church Street.
