Two Receive Ray White Allens Scholarships to Study at Northtec
Two impressive Northland youth – Sean Thorburn and Kelly Springford – are this year’s recipients of the Ray White Allens Education Foundation Scholarships to study at NorthTec.
Selected from a field of nearly 100 applicants from schools across Northland, Sean from Pompallier College will study cinematography and video-editing in the Media Arts programme; while Kelly from Whangarei Girls’ High School will study for the Bachelor in Nursing.
"As far back as I can remember, my one goal in life was to become successful in the field of film … I feel that the language of cinematography, how the pacing and visual flow of images can create a vivid, coherent experience in the viewer's mind, is something that I resonate to and understand on a natural and instinctive level,” says Sam.
He aims to complete the Diploma in Applied Arts (Digital Multimedia, Level 6) then move further into video editing at South Seas Film School and then possibly the Toi Whakaari Film School in Wellington.
Kelly’s recent experience of assisting in a family birth led her to choose nursing as a career path - one that she is keen to pursue locally at NorthTec. A karate expert, Kelly says she will apply the same dedication she took to her sport to achieve her goals in nursing.
“I have been told NorthTec trains very good practical nurses, something I aspire to be I want to do the best I can in NorthTec’s Bachelor of Nursing Level 7, as successfully completing this qualification will give me an advantage when searching for jobs,” says Kelly.
Described by her teachers as "an outstanding young woman" with reliability and independence with a cooperative and unfailingly courteous nature she has furthered her Interest in a nursing career through participation in the Incubator programme - giving her hands-on experience in the health sector.
Ray White Allens Education Foundation scholarship recipients each receive up to $2,000 each in funding to be used toward their approved course of study.
