Media release: Construction Industry Scholarships Awarded (18/12/2012)
Recently NorthTec and the New Zealand Institute of Building’s (NZIOB) Northland Chapter hosted their 10th annual
Scholarship Awards, in conjunction with a number of sponsors
NorthTec has a Memorandum of Understanding with NZIOB that includes a provision for four construction trades
scholarships each year for students who have achieved in fields of academic performance, attitude and passion within
their chosen field. This year’s scholarship recipients were awarded in front of their whānau, friends and local NZIOB
members at the event held at the Bank Street Social Club.
The 2012 recipients were Brodie Crum for National Certificate in Carpentry (iTaB), John Atkins for National Certificate
in Electrical Engineering (pre-trade), Bronwyn McLean for Diploma in Architectural Technology and Stephen Smith for
National Certificate in Carpentry (pre-trade). Each student was awarded a certificate from NorthTec and NZIOB, a $500
cash scholarship and a $100 voucher from Placemakers.
Brodie Crum was chosen due to the excellence shown both in the theory and practical components of the NorthTec block
courses that he attended. It was noted that Brodie has a good knowledge of the building process and is genuinely
interested in learning more about it and he demonstrates enthusiasm for the methods of achieving excellence in building,
from aesthetics to structural and environmental considerations. Brodie is currently working with his father at Matt Crum
Builders.
John Atkins was a conscientious and keen student whose work was always accurate and completed on time. His practical
skills complement his knowledge of electrical theory and all aspects of the programme were completed to a high standard,
with him being one of the highest achievers in New Zealand at the Electrical Appliance Serviceperson exams held in June.
John displayed excellent time keeping and constantly brought a positive and professional attitude with him. John is
currently seeking employment.
Brownwyn McLean showed excellent written and verbal communication skills this year during her study and was found to be
a conscientious and hardworking student who was often helpful to her classmates. She completed her first year of the
Diploma as a competent operator of AutoCAD 2012 and has the ability to execute projects on an individual basis
consistently producing a high standard of work with a clarity of presentation. Brownyn will be continuing her tertiary
education next year at NorthTec, and will also be appointed to the NZIOB board as a student representative.
Stephen Smith had the practical advantage of a boatbuilding background when he came to study Carpentry at NorthTec. He
held the top attendance rate of 99% for the programme, completed all his assessment well and achieved the required work
experience. Stephen rated top of the class with his technical drawing skills and was found to be very helpful with other
students. Stephen is currently seeking employment.
Adele Stone, Academic Manager for Trades and Technology at NorthTec, stated that each of the four students were “very
worthy recipients of the scholarship”, and she is sure that each of them will go forward to achieve great things in
their futures.
