Christchurch community can take heart over Salisbury School’s win

Salisbury School’s legal victory against the Government over its decision to close the girls’ residential school will give Christchurch education communities a big boost.

NZEI Te Riu Roa National President Ian Leckie says Salisbury School’s board and its community can take credit for standing up for their kids against poor decisions by the Government.

“This is great news. It shows that it is possible to fight and win against bad Government decisions.”

Mr Leckie says the High Court ruling will throw even more uncertainty over the Government’s plans to close and merge 37 Christchurch schools.

“Obviously Christchurch schools will be looking closely at the ruling and what precedent it creates for them.

“Last week’s notice to strike by teachers in Christchurch makes it clear that the Minister and the Ministry of Education must urgently address the concerns of the Christchurch community.”

Mr Leckie will be leading a delegation of teachers from Christchurch in a meeting with the Education Secretary Lesley Longstone today to again ask the Government to halt its flawed plans and listen to Christchurch.
