Creative festival exhibitions reimagine our world
Reimagining the built environment and the objects and art that populate our world, exhibitions opening at CPIT’S
Creative Festival on Monday 6 November are brimming with new ideas and energy for Christchurch and beyond.
EXIT – Architectural
A re-design for Linwood Mall leads viewers into EXIT, a smorgasbord of residential, commercial, interior, restoration,
furniture and urban design projects by over 30 graduating Bachelor of Architectural Studies students in CPIT’s CPSA
building. Industry interest is expected to be high at the EXIT industry evening on Thursday, organised by Architectural
Designers New Zealand with guest speaker Bob Burnett. “With the Christchurch rebuild gearing up we expect many of the invited industry partners to be seeking designers to
employ, so I expect industry will be paying close attention to the work on display at EXIT this year,” Architectural
Studies programme leader Laura Kellaway said.
EXIT is on 10am – 5pm until 13 November.
RIPE - Art and Design
In the Rakaia Centre, RIPE is an exciting opportunity to encounter the next generation of artists, designers, photographers and animators. Manager
of Art and Design Bruce Russell says there has been a major shift towards screen-based, web-based and interactive works,
particularly this year.
“Anyone who is alive in Christchurch in the 21st century knows that visual communications and visual arts are happening
online more and more. Our students are leading this shift at CPIT and we are encouraging them to do so in terms of our
programme design. This gives me hope for the future.”
RIPE is on 9am- 5pm until 14 November.
Thinking Ahead – Certificate in Design
Also opening on Monday is the Certificate in Design students’ “Thinking Ahead” exhibition featuring creative work based on the transformation of forty synthetic heads into original sculptures, in the Design & Art auditorium, D Block, Madras Street Campus, until 14 November.
FLICK – New Zealand Broadcasting School
FLICK is open now in a 60s caravan outside the Rakaia Centre. The 10 minute loop of student film and documentary is
screened in a cosy setting complete with beanbags featuring work from New Zealand Broadcasting School students.
FLICK is 9am – 5pm until November 15.
VISUALISE – Interior Design
Finally, off at the Home Ideas Centre in Riccarton, opening on 14 November, VISUALISE takes a fresh look at interior design. CPIT’s Certificate of Interior Décor and Diploma in Interior Design
(Residential) students present their best ideas for new and existing residential buildings, kitchen and bathroom design,
hard and soft furnishings, decorative treatments and colour.
“It’s an exciting time for interior design. Because of the Christchurch rebuild there is a strong demand for qualified
interior designers. We’ve had so much interest in our Diploma in Interior Design for next year that we have already
increased our capacity,” CPIT Interior Design Programme Leader Maggie O’Neill said.

CPIT’s Creative Festival puts on a performance
Catch a cool jazz beat, explore cutting edge theatre and disability performance, celebrate Māori culture and discover
the latest catwalk creations at CPIT’s Creative Festival this month.
A cabaret of voice and instrumental takes over the CPSA on 15 November at 8pm for BEAT, which can only be from CPIT’s popular Jazz School. Tickets are $18 (students $12).
HI! HA! – Māori and Pasifika
Also on 15 November, at 5.30pm, HI! HA! delivers a night of traditions and varied talents ranging from poetry, song and dance to mahi toi and a presentation
from third year Bachelor of language (specialisation Māori) students. CPIT’s Te Puna Wānaka celebrates the many
traditions of Aotearoa and the islands of the great ocean of Kiwa, Te Puna Wanaka, Coventry St, Madras St Campus. Gold
coin donations welcome.
PITCH - fashion
Always a crowd-pleaser, the stylish and creative PITCH takes fashion from classroom to catwalk, with designs and collections by students from the CPIT School of Fashion. There are two shows on 24 November at 6pm and
8.30pm, Rakaia Centre, Madras Street Campus. Tickets are $25.
THE LONELY AND THE LOVELY - theatre
Following on from their standing-ovation performance at Leeds Festival and growing international recognition, Different
Light Theatre Company presents a unique snapshot of disability performance work from 29 November to 2 December at 7.30pm
called THE LONELY AND THE LOVELY. Tickets are $18 ($12 concession) plus booking fee, at NASDA Theatre, E Block, Madras Street campus.
