Unison Staff Helping to Shape the Futures of High School Students
Friday 2 November 2012 – In a first, Unison has partnered with Flaxmere College to pilot a free tutoring service for
students working towards their NCEA qualifications in 2012.
The programme, which began last night, sees Unison staff from various academic backgrounds providing one-on-one
assistance to students studying NCEA Level 1 and Level 3 Mathematics and Science, in the lead up to final end of year
exams.
Unison Group Chief Executive, Ken Sutherland says the partnership further cements Unison's commitment to strengthening
its ties to the community.
"Due to the complex nature of Unison’s business, our staff-base has an excellent pool of knowledge and skill in a wide
range of academic areas.
This initiative sees us coupling the expertise of our staff with our determination to see our communities succeed, and
provide support wherever possible.
We believe this will, undoubtedly, provide an excellent opportunity for the young talent in our regions to further their
academic ambitions.”
Louise Anaru, Principal of Flaxmere College says the programme will have significant impact on the futures of the
students.
“I think this is a great opportunity for our school and students to work together to ensure and support their academic
success. I really appreciate the Unison mentors giving up their time and expertise to mentor our students.
This is a great investment in our future leaders of tomorrow.”
Initially, the programme will focus on Mathematics (Probability) and Science (Physics) and will be delivered to Year 11
and Year 13 students.
If the pilot is successful, Unison will look to further the programme in 2013, with the potential for tutoring to cover
more subjects, and the service to be offered to more high schools in Hawke’s Bay.
