Open Day opens doors to opportunity
The doors will be flung wide open at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology’s campus in Nelson for its annual Open
Day on Thursday 18 October, between 10am and 1pm.
“We are definitely open for inspection!” NMIT Chief Executive Tony Gray says. “If you’ve ever wondered what goes on at
NMIT and what we can do for you and your career – this Open Day is your chance to find out.”
The NMIT Open Day is designed to give people considering tertiary education a genuine feel for what NMIT can offer, with
all the possible training and career opportunities laid out.
One of the highlights of the event will be a series of activities presented by tutors from different programmes
including Viticulture, Aquaculture, Te Tari Māori, Applied Fitness and Carpentry.
Nelson nurse Olivia Te-Au was inspired to take up nursing after attending one such presentation at a previous NMIT Open
Day. At the time she was all set to pack her bags for Christchurch to study science at university.
“At the Open Day I found out about nursing as a career and that was it - I decided to stay in Nelson and study the
Bachelor of Nursing,” Olivia says. “I could see really big benefits to staying in Nelson, studying at NMIT and becoming
a nurse.”
Now aged 21, Olivia has graduated and started her first job at Nelson Hospital as a new graduate registered nurse.
“It all went really quickly. It seems like only the other day I was starting the course and now here I am - all grown up
with a career and a real job. I wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t been to the Open Day.”
NMIT’s learning spaces will all be open to view including the creative industries building, NMIT training restaurant –
The Rata Room and the Diploma of Aquaculture wet lab. Visitors will also be able see students in action doing everything
from colouring hair in the beauty and hair salons to composing music in the creative industries building.
“The community are invited to look around our campus, find out about programmes starting in 2013 and the career
opportunities they present meet with our tutors, students and staff, and get a genuine taste of campus life here at
NMIT,” Tony Gray says. “It’ll be lots of fun, informative and action-packed.”
As well as careers and training advice, the Open Day will also have live entertainment, a free BBQ and games with Saniti
– the NMIT student association. The sought after ‘The Edge’ $2,500 Study Scholarship for 2013 will be drawn on the
student centre lawn at 12.45pm. Entries can be made on the day and applicants must be there to claim the prize.
