More honours for UCOL-trained designer


The typeface designs of Whanganui School of Design graduate Kris Sowersby have again proved to be winners – this time at the highly rated BEST awards.

Kris won Gold as Design Director for The Founders Grotesk Family typefaces), Silver (Design Director for Metric & Calibre), and a Bronze (Design Director for Pitch), in the Graphic Design/Graphic Arts section.

In the Graphic Design / Visual Communication section, Kris took Silver as Contributor for Metric & Calibre Type Specimens, and a Bronze (Contibutor for Klim Newspaper Specimen). He also won Gold in the Interactive / Large Scale Websites section for designs developed by his company Klim Type Foundry.

In last year’s BEST awards, Kris won the most coveted pin, the Purple Pin, representing supreme design within each category.

Kris graduated from the Whanganui School of Design in 2003. After working as a graphic designer he started the Klim Type Foundry in 2005. His first retail typeface, Feijoa, was released onto the international market in 2007.

His second retail release won a Certificate of Excellence from the Type Designers Club, New York in 2008. Since then he has received two more Certificates of Excellence and worked on various custom and retail typefaces including FF Meta Serif, the seriffed sibling of the renowned FF Meta.

In 2010 Kris was named an ADC Young Gun, an international award programme.

His typefaces combine historical knowledge with contemporary craftsmanship and finish.
