NZEI Te Riu Roa supports Christchurch
kura kaupapa schools
NZEI Te Riu Roa
is calling on the Ministry of Education to fully consult
over its proposal to merge two Christchurch kura kaupapa
schools.
NZEI Te Riu Roa’s Maori leadership group, Te Reo Areare says it is vital that the proper process has been worked through before any important decisions are made over the schools’ futures.
NZEI strongly believes children should be at the centre of any plans for the future of education in Christchurch and that all children deserve fair and equitable access to quality local education.
This means no child should be disadvantaged because of the quake. The proposal to merge separate kura kaupapa schools against the wishes of the children, their whanau and school hapori, and without due consultation, runs counter to these principles.
The Ministry’s proposal was announced last week as part of its reforms to Christchurch education.
